If you’re dreaming of an intimate, wildly beautiful elopement, Iceland is one of the most breathtaking places in the world to say your vows. From roaring waterfalls to black sand beaches and cinematic mountain backdrops, couples searching for where to elope in Iceland are spoiled with unforgettable options. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how this landscape elevates not just your photos—but the entire experience of your wedding day.
Below is a complete guide starting from the airport in Reykjavík in the west and following the Southern Coastline of Iceland all the way to Vestrahorn in the Southeast.

Where to Stay in Southern Iceland
Southern Iceland is ideal for elopements thanks to its accessibility, variety of scenery, and proximity to iconic landmarks. You will fly into Reykjavík airport and and then choose your stay along the Ring Road between Seljalandsfoss and Vík.
Look for boutique hotels, countryside guesthouses, or modern cabins with mountain views. Popular areas include Vík, Hvolsvöllur, and Skaftafell, which allow easy access to waterfalls, beaches, and glaciers. Staying central reduces driving time and gives you flexibility if weather shifts—something every Iceland wedding photographer plans for.
Here are 3 boutique hotels I recommend!

Skalakot Manor Hotel Horse Trek
Our couple enjoyed Skálakot Manor and it is the coziest bed and breakfast, wellness driven, spa and restaurant all in one experience. The best part was the horse trek tour in the hills behind the property leading us to mini waterfalls and wild sheep. So, we might be biased saying it’s our favorite hotel!

Your Iceland Elopement Itinerary
First, the following spots have been carefully chosen for picturesque views, adventure, epic backdrops and convenience for being next to one another. Next, every location besides the canyon hike at Fjaðrárgljúfur are simple “park your car and you’re there!” kind of spots. Because of the distance between them, hitting all 6 locations in 1 day is not recommended. I would choose your favorite 3 spots for your wedding day and the other 3 spots to visit the day before or day after as part of your honeymoon tour around Iceland. Your elopement is whatever you choose to make of it. Therefore, it can be as relaxed or adventurous as you want it to be. All in all, Iceland gives you the best of both worlds!

Elopement Location #1: Seljalandsfoss
Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls and a favorite elopement location. You can walk behind the waterfall, creating dramatic, once-in-a-lifetime ceremony photos. It’s easily accessible yet feels incredibly cinematic, especially during sunrise or sunset. This could make a great “pit stop” for some quick photos behind the waterfall for your elopement gallery!

Elopement Location #2: Skógafoss
Skógafoss is powerful, bold, and unforgettable. This massive waterfall often creates rainbows on sunny days, adding a magical element to your vows. For couples wanting an epic, adventurous feel, Skógafoss is a top answer to where to elope in Iceland. But be warned, the mist is powerful here! All hair and makeup will be drenched at the end so I recommend making this your last stop of the day.

Elopement Location #3: Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Known for its basalt columns and crashing Atlantic waves, Reynisfjara is dramatic and moody in the best way. This location is perfect for couples drawn to dark romance and raw nature. As a wedding photographer with an eye for editorial portraits against nature landscapes, this beach offers striking contrast and movement in every frame. Our couple visited the beach below and the cliffs above for a honeymoon/maternity session all in one!

Elopement Location #4: Diamond Beach
Diamond Beach gets its name from glacial ice scattered across black sand, glittering like diamonds. Located near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, this spot feels otherworldly and is especially stunning during winter or early spring elopements. Our couple got super lucky with the sun coming out strong making the blue water shine bright!

Elopement Location #5: Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
Fjaðrárgljúfur is a winding, moss-covered canyon that feels straight out of a fairytale. Elevated viewpoints make it ideal for intimate ceremonies with sweeping, cinematic backdrops—perfect for couples who want something unique and serene. This was my #1 MUST SEE spot when I came back with my parents to show them Iceland. This canyon is unreal and our couple loved it!

Elopement Location #6: Vestrahorn
Vestrahorn offers towering mountains, reflective black sand, and dramatic skies. Though farther east, it’s one of the most visually striking places to elope in Iceland. For couples seeking a bold, editorial feel, Vestrahorn is unmatched.

Best Honeymoon Adventures in Iceland
Now that you’ve eloped, it’s time to adventure around Iceland for your honeymoon! Our couple did the Skaftafell Glacier Tour and we all put on ice spikes and drank glacier water together. It was an incredible experience led by professionals!

Best Lagoons in Iceland for Your Honeymoon
After your elopement, unwinding in a geothermal lagoon is a must. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous and closest to the airport, perfect for your first day in Iceland to unwind any jet lag. For a quieter, more romantic experience, Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík offers ocean views and a stunning infinity-edge design.
